Can You Learn Anything from a Training Game?

Many managers wonder: Can people really learn anything from a game they play in a training session? How long would the impact remain on the job? And what serious business objective would a training game really achieve?

There are two types of benefits that come from a training game, one is direct, and the other indirect. The direct benefit is the insight, or lesson, that participants learn from the game. The lessons of most training games are usually very apparent and easy to grasp. But people will remember a lesson they learned by participating in an activity or game much longer than one they learned by passively reading a PowerPoint slide.

We also get an indirect benefit from playing training games.

One of the early games, that wasn’t even a training game, I participated in was a simple volleyball game we played as part of a day-long team building retreat. We had a lot of fun playing the game for about an hour. We changed positions, team formations, roles, and so on. The retreat included many other topics and exercises. But the fun we had playing volleyball caused the dozen or so who played to laugh, cry, jump, fall, lose, and win together, and get to know each other personally. The result was that, for the next few years, whenever I needed help from a department where a team member worked I'd just call the person and get great help. I did the same for them.

Would you want any better business results from a team building retreat?

Whether in a training session or in a department picnic, there is nothing like games to get people to loosen up, have fun, and become friends. We talked enough. It’s time to play something.
